A Party for Adults

When the going gets tough, the Democrats pull together and act like adults. That is the encouraging news today when the Democrats voted to let Joe Lieberman keep his committee chairmanship.

It really is remarkable if you think about it though. A political party not 'playing politics' and stooping to the lowest common denominator. Quite to the contrary. By behaving like adults and ACTUALLY reaching out to the other side (or at least those who don't subscribe to their own exact orthodoxy) the Democrats are showing that they are the bigger party.

Lieberman rightly credited Obama for making this happen. How about that? Democrats off on the right foot!

I'm not sure maturity is the reason Lieberman kept his committee chairmanship but it could certainly be spun that way.

Lieberman showed in his last election that he does not need to be a Democrat to be elected, and for the Democrats to shun someone they elected to be a vice-presidential candidate only about 10 years ago would be a mistake.

Also, since his election, Obama seems to be making a b-line away from the left and toward the center. Lieberman is probably the most bipartisan elected official in Washington. Losing Lieberman would undermine the idea of unity which Obama needs to sell if the Democrats want to maintain their majority.

Personally, I had hoped that the Democrats would at the very least take away Lieberman's gavel as chair of Homelaned Security. Why not put him in charge of some committee with jurisdiction over areas where he actually agrees with Democrats on? On Homeland Security/National Security issues he is to the right of most Republicans! I think he has no business being chairman of that committee in a Democratically controlled Seante. Put him in charge of Environment and Public Works, or something like that.....
