Iran So Far Away

Oh William Kristol. Will you ever be right? In a blog entry that echoed his comments on Fox News Sunday (which echoed every conservative's view almost exactly on the subject) my favorite neocon, Billy Kristol, compared the American President to Neville Chamberlain. He feels that Obama has not declared his solidarity with the Iranian people.

I wonder if it has occurred to Bill that if the President did that, he would forcibly interject the United States into the discussion and muddy the waters? Can you imagine a bigger Christmas present for Amadinejad? He would paint the protesters today as pro American/anti-Iranian and the very strong momentum and large scale outrage within Iran would all be for naught. The issue would be spun as "U.S. Imperialism" or even worse "U.S. election meddling".

I love Bill's fake outrage. When you watch him on TV, you get the feeling that he doesn't believe he's saying the things he is sometimes.

The argument quite simply is that I thought it was smart for Obama to not give the Iranian government the usual scapegoat (the U.S.).

I think the benefits of doing that have been maximized and now he is starting to be more vocal.

From everything i've read, the election seems questionable. I mean, they had record turn out, people were still voting, and they announced the election's results? And the oppostion leader guy lost all the cities (which is where he was supposed to do well). Who knows for sure though. Hell, I'm not crazy with how we do elections in the U.S., so who am i to talk.

When are you coming to NC for a visit?

I'm not sure I understand the argument. Are you saying that Obama should not declare his solidarity with the Iranian people because Iran is a rival of the US? If this is true, then you also seem to be arguing that Kennedy should not have given his "ich bein ein berliner" speech and Reagan should not have given his "tear down this wall speech." Presidents showing their solidarity with the citizens of other countries often contributes to the end of the conflict and makes the transition from rival to ally much smoother.

The Iran election provides another example of Obama's fecklessness. He had the opportunity to show that he can do more than simply appease... Maybe appeasement is a characteristic he cannot transcend.

With regard to the election, is there a good reason to believe that it was rigged? I think this is a more interesting question.

Oh, and here is a link of an Iranian protester who protested by climbing the Freedom Tower in Tehran.

In other news, Tehran has more completed Freedom Towers than New York City?
