Everyone in the world should know 4 things about Ethanol:
1. Burning ethanol can reduce our dependency on foreign oil and does not produce additional Carbon Dioxide or C02. No additional C02 is produced because of the Carbon Cycle. That is, since the plant absorbs C02 when its growing, this will balance the C02 when its burned.
2. While burning ethanol does not produce additional C02, producing it/transporting it does. If you were to bulldoze land to grow corn, the bulldozing takes energy and you lose the C02 absorption of what was bulldozed. This may be a temporary effect until the production/transportation was using ethanol.
3. Not all means to get ethanol are created equal. Corn is not super efficient at making ethanol (unlike Sugar cane and some others). This quote from this article says it all:
"If every one of the 70 million acres on which corn was grown in 2006 was used for ethanol, the amount produced would displace only 12 percent of the U.S. gasoline market. Moreover, the "new" (non-fossil) energy gained would be very small -- just 2.4 percent of the market. Car tune-ups and proper tire air pressure would save more energy."
4. Politics will force ethanol to be made from corn in the U.S (because presidential candidates want to be elected president). This will cause the price of corn to go way up (along with food prices) all for very little if any benefit to the environment or reducing our dependecy on foreign oil. Oh, and its going to cost us a fortune.
Super.
